Seminar in Canadian Studies in Latin America (SEMINECAL)
SEMINECAL
took place for the first time in Mexico City, 13th and 14th of February
2003. The event was carried on at Casa de la Primera Imprenta de
America of Universidad Autonoma Metropolitana. This Seminar was
organized jointly by Universidad de la Habana (UH), Universidad
Evangelica del Paraguay (UEP) and Universidad Autonoma Metropolitana
(UAM), with the sponsorship of the Department of Foreign Affairs
and International Trade of Canada (DFAIT-MAECI.
During
this seminar 15 graduate students from Master's and Doctorate's
programs from different Latin American countries such as Cuba, Argentina,
Mexico, Haiti and Paraguay were selected to participate in view
of the quality of their research.
Five
general topics considered of significance in Canadian Studies were
discussed in this Seminar: Economics, Politics, Migration, Education
and Culture. The works presented will be published in 2004.
Our
guest speaker was Dr. François Rocher, Director of the Centre
for Canadian Studies at Carleton University, as well as M.A. Raúl
Rodriguez, University of Havana. Both of them, during their presentation
emphasized the importance of Canadian Studies in Latin America.
The
SEMINECAL conducted a discussion session aimed to create new projects
and an agenda for common tasks with the objective of promoting continuity
to some research and present them in the next SEMINECAL that will
take place in Asuncion, Paraguay.
